Gupteswar Temple, Gupteswar(Koraput)

  • The Gupteswar Cave is a cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) away from Jeypore, in the Koraput District of Odisha, India. This pilgrim site is a limestone cave, and its main attraction is the gigantic Shiva Linga, which is believed to be increasing in size.
  • According to legend, the cave was discovered by Lord Rama and re-discovered during the reign of Maharajah Veer Vikram Dev. The cave holds significant spiritual importance, particularly during the holy month of Shravan, when devotees visit the shrine barefooted, carrying decorated bamboo palanquins called “Kanwadiya”. Before worshiping Lord Gupteshwar, devotees bathe in the Maha Kund, a sacred water body.
  • To reach the Shiva Linga temple, visitors must climb 200 steps. The Gupteswar Cave is a revered destination for devotees of Lord Shiva, and its unique features and spiritual significance make it a must-visit destination for those interested in exploring the rich cultural and religious heritage of Odisha.
